One of the hardiest Phyllostachys, P. bissetii is a vigorous grower, and one of the first Phyllostachys to put up new shoots in the spring. A handsome, upright, medium sized species with shiny dark green leaves, lush foliage, and culms ranging from dark green to greyish green. Phyllostachys bissetii culms that receive more sun exposure will turn a golden-tan color. Its foliage is almost completely windproof, thereby making it perfect for screening or hedging. You can also 'trim it up' to show off the densely clustered canes and canopy habit. It can remain compact for some years before running. Gain a hardiness zone with winter cover. Loves Nettle Tea as a fertilizer.

In USDA Climate Zones expect the following mature size culm heights:

  • Zone 7 - to 30+ feet
  • Zone 6 - 18 feet
  • Zone 5 - 12 feet
  • Zone 4 - 8 feet
