The black elder species is known for being a coarse shrub, but Cutleaf Black Elder is much more delicate. With its dark green ferny foliage and fragrant Queen-Ann-lace like flowers that bloom in late spring. Once the flowers fade clusters of dark purple fruit appear, which are both ornamental and can be eaten when cooked. Large in stature this shrub grows up to 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide, best used in the border or background of landscapes.
